Chantry Flats Backpack Campout

Scouts backpack up the Winter Creek Loop to Hoegee's campground then backpack out the next day back to Chantry Flats

Approximately 5.1 mile loop

Directions to Chantry Flats: From interstate 210 in Arcadia, exit at Santa Anita Ave and go north for 6 miles to Chantry Flats Picnic Area. The vehicle gate for Chantry Flat Road is open from 6 am to 6pm. Note: Due to weather Chantry Flats is subject to periodic and extended closures.

Check with Forest Service 626-574-5200 or Sierra Madre Police Department 626-355-1414 before hitting the trail.

Parking can be a problem. Lot is usually full by 7am! Get there early or arrange for a pick up and drop off. There is a fee for parking.

Requirements: National Forest Service Pass required.

Lower Winter Creek Loop to Hoegees Campground (approximately little over 2 miles)

Start from the entrance of the lower parking lot of Chantry Flats, walk past the locked gate and see sign calling this route the Gabrielino Trail. Hike down the asphalt paved trail/road into Big Santa Anita Canyon to Roberts Camp (.6 miles). After crossing the bridge at the bottom of the pavement, turn left on Lower Winter Creek Trail. Make your way along the creek past a wilderness cabins and concrete dams. You will cross the creek back and forth several times. Follow trail into Hoegees Campground (2.1 miles from beginning of trailhead, 1.5 miles from Roberts camp)

Hoegees Trail Camp: primitive 15 site hike in campground, first come, first serve, with pit toilets, picnic tables and fire rings, water can be filtered/boiled most of the year from the creek running alongside trail. Lat: 34.207777, Long: -118.033333

Hoegees to Upper Winter Creek Trail back to Chantry Flats

Upper Winter Creek Trail continues from the upper end of the campground on the right. Immediately cross the creek and climbe past the check dam up the slope, and after 1/8 mile (4 minutes) you reach the Lower Zion Train Juntion. Continue left and in another few minutes, you;ll cross the creek and come to the trail junction to Mt Wilson on the right. Continue straight and follow the Upper Winter Creek. Through the tree, you begin to get glimpses of the ridges above and the canyons below. After about seven minutes the trail dips downhill for a few minutes, then back up, and after another ten minutes you start your descent, heading downhill all the way to Chantry Flat, 3 miles from Hoegees. Stay alert for poison oak. Upper Winter Creek Trail ends at the paved San Olene service road. The sign reads 2.5 miles to Hoegees, 6.8 to Mt Wilson. Got left on the road and follow it down past the picnic area a the south end of the upper parking lot of Chantry Flat, about ½ mile.
